Art Director

Harmonix is looking for an inspiring and passionate Art Director to lead our art team in creating beautiful, best-in-class music games. The studio Art Director is responsible for ensuring the artistic quality of all of Harmonix’s projects. The Art Director establishes the quality bar for our products, ensures that bar is met on each project, drives technical advancement and best practices for the art department, and encourages the growth of the individuals on the team.

Note: this position can be fully remote and does not require relocation to Boston (although we are open to relocation and local candidates). Our studio has operated effectively with remote employees in the past, both prior to and during the pandemic.



  • Define the art bar and articulate the artistic vision for our products; ensure all art assets in all of our titles are of the highest artistic quality and uphold the integrity of the design and defined artistic vision

  • Develop and drive the artistic goals for every project at the studio through all phases of the game development cycle -- pre-production through final product release

  • Collaborate closely with the VP of Creative to ensure the team is high functioning, successful, and always striving to improve

  • Drive decisions regarding staffing, software/hardware improvements, development processes, educational resources and programming, and general best practices

  • Direct Art Leads in identifying and solving a variety of art, design, and other development issues, including identifying and resolving technical problems, defining stylistic vision, establishing and maintaining aesthetic standards, and driving the overall technical direction of the project

  • Provide constructive and concise feedback on all aspects of development art at the studio -- concepts through finished assets

  • Mentor all members of the art team – identifies opportunities and areas of improvement for individual team members and coaches them through challenges they face on projects

  • Drive hiring process for new art team members, with a dedication to diversity and an acute awareness of the issues around implicit bias in hiring, and networks with sources that provide access to junior talent and interns

  • Create clear, comprehensive, and compelling style and technical guides in collaboration with team Art Leads

  • Establish relationships with outsource houses and external partners for various project and studio needs

  • Effectively advocate and persuasively present to our publishers, to the studio, and to the executive team


Requirements & Skills

  • A desire to innovate and to go above and beyond in pursuit of excellence
  • 3+ years’ senior art leadership experience (for example, Art Director at a game studio or Art Lead on multiple titles)
  • Outstanding portfolio, including art created directly and titles worked on in a leadership capacity
  • 5+ years’ experience working in Unreal Engine
  • Experience with outsourcing and working with remote partners
  • Passion for music required; musicians preferred
  • Ability to define a high caliber vision for our titles, with outstanding visual and technical understanding in rendering and asset creation
  • A keen understanding of the latest art tech approaches and ability to utilize and troubleshoot them to achieve artistic vision
  • Experience managing and leading members of all art disciplines including concept, character, animation, environment, VFX, UI, lighting, shading and rendering
  • Strong communication/listening, interpersonal, and organizational skills
  • Passion for making and playing great games, demonstrating an awareness of current titles, genres, and industry trends.
